What Makes Great Relationships and Marriages Work

9) Water and mow your own lawn.

  • We’ve all heard the expression the grass is not always greener on the side. If the grass looks greener on the other side, it is probably because you are not mowing and watering your own. “Don’t worry about what is going well in someone else’s relationship. Spend that time celebrating your own successes and working out your own problems”.

10) Communication.

  • I purposely saved this one for last because it is a piece in all the ones above. Even though everyone I have asked said something different, they always add communication somewhere in the conversation. Basically it boils down to this:

Communication= listening + talking.

Take turns listening and talking to each other, empathize to demonstrate understanding and  acceptance.

I am a 26 year-old educator on the run of becoming all that I can in the time that I have. A few years ago, I embarked on a journey filled with spiritual discoveries, healthy habits, and a passion for education stronger than I've ever had. Learning what to do to become a better person have always interest me. One of my passions is to know a little about everything in order to gain the capability of forming my own opinion so others won't have to do it for me. Another passion that was buried deep inside finally came to the surface and allowed me to see the adventurous side of me. I am on a journey to see the world and do things outside of my comfort zone. I will write all about it along the way!

    Nice article. Been there done that. I put down my experiences. Many of them resonate with what you have written down. Read http://www.gkrishna.com/2007/10/accepting-your-wife-in-marriage.html and see how it fits into some of the things you have said.
